Water Safety Tips for Your Dog

It may be spring, but Spot has still been busy with boats—boat shows, that is. These shows get us thinking about hitting the dock in the upcoming summer months here in the Northeast (and to our friends in warmer Southern climates who enjoy boating year-round, we envy you!).

We recently saw long-time customers and met some new friends at the New England Boat Show in Boston, the Hartford Boat Show at Mohegan Sun and the Palm Beach International Boat Show. It was so nice to hear stories, share pictures, and reminisce year-round about our favorite four-legged pals!

Boating is a way for families and friends to make memories. And as we count down the days until we hit the sea again, we’d like to offer a few tips for smoother sailing with your pets.

Rinse your dog after every dip

This will remove salt from the ocean or any bacteria from freshwater. Dried salt can be itchy and irritating, and it’s just smart to rinse off any pathogens from local waters. No need to shampoo your dog after every swim, according to Tufts University veterinary dermatologists. Just a rinse with tap water will do!

Don’t have too much fun in the sun

Our resident Spot Dog, Torey, is more of a sunbather than a swimmer. But just like humans, dogs also need to be protected from too many rays. Dogs can get sunburns and skin cancer from too much direct sun. If your dog is spending a good amount of time in the sun, consider sunscreen protection. At a minimum, spray a light, unscented SPF 15 that’s free of zinc oxide on the dog’s belly and inside the hind legs.

Experts agree that after three hours of direct sun exposure, dogs should have some shade time. And of course, constant hydration is key to avoiding heat stroke. Always have a convenient, collapsible water bowl and plenty of fresh water for your dog to drink.

Keep those paws cool

Since dogs don’t have sweat glands, they pant to cool off and even perspire through their paws! So long exposure to hot surfaces (such as a hot deck or driveway) is not good. Know which surfaces on your boat tend to become very hot in the sun, and protect your dog’s feet.

Support your struggling swimmer

If your dog isn’t a confident swimmer yet (or maybe if your dog is too confident, and barges into the water every chance he or she gets!) then a doggy life jacket is a great way to help keep them safe.

Powerboating, kayaking or rafting, all breeds benefit from a life jacket, especially in a strong current or choppy water. Look for these important qualities of a good life jacket: 1. a strong handle that lets you easily yank the pup out of the water; 2. reflective trim that enables you to spot him quickly; and 3. a bright color for maximum visibility (we prefer neon yellow). Always use the life jacket handle to lift the dog from the water; never grab the dog’s collar.

Keep a pet first-aid kit aboard

Keep a stocked pet first-aid kit on board your boat or handy for any active outdoor or water sport. Some useful items for your kit include antiseptic wipes, gauze, adhesive, bandages, cold pack, sting relief pads, tweezers, emergency blanket and seasickness remedy (yes, dogs can take Dramamine).

Thanks for reading! We’ll see you next time as we ‘dive deeper’ on dogs and boating.

We’d love to know…

Where is your family and dog’s favorite getaway for fun in the sun? And what are some ways you keep your dog cool?

So Excited for the Palm Beach International Boat Show 2019

Spot heads to the 34th annual Palm Beach International Boat Show this week, March 28 – 31, 2019.

This show is one of the top five boat shows in the country, and we love it! The show features over $1 billion worth of yachts and accessories. Hundreds of boats are featured, ranging from 8-foot inflatables to super yachts almost 300 feet in length.

There are plenty of fun and educational activities, including sportfishing seminars, kids’ fishing clinics, and action packed in-water demos and product exhibits.

We love meeting folks who share their boating lifestyle with their four-legged best friends and hearing about their nauti-dogs’ adventures. Visit us in our same location, Booth, #822.

We’ll be introducing The Royal Palm dog collar…distinctive style for the island pup…along with our latest spring/summer 2019 line of nautical design dog collars, leads and After 5’ bowties.

And although we’re delightfully busy during show times, we always schedule in a couple free days to enjoy the food and culture in the Palm Beach area.

Take your pick…fine dining, hole in the wall diner, or your favorite ethnic cuisine…there’s something for everyone, even the pickiest eater in your crowd.

Spot’s picks…

In Palm Beach
Palm Beach Grill on Royal Poinciana Way: A heartfelt recommendation by anyone who’s ever been! Enjoy classic American dishes presented beautifully. Try the deviled eggs and slow roasted pork ribs!

The Royal Poinciana Plaza on Royal Poinciana Way: Luxury shopping and delicious food. Warmth and charm nestled in classic John Volk architecture and lush garden courtyards. An exquisite destination to while away the day.

The Breakers Palm Beach on S. County Road: On a private beach, this exquisite Italian Renaissance-style resort sets the standard in resort luxury and redefines what a glamorous experience can be. Stop in for a drink at the Seafood Bar.

West Palm Beach faves
Tapas at the Avocado Grill on Datura: It’s the spot for artisanal small plates, a coastal-fresh raw bar and creative craft cocktails. We love the relaxed, friendly vibe, and can’t get enough of the parmesan truffle fries.

Rocco’s Tacos on Clematis: They serve absolutely wonderful authentic Mexican food in a fun, casual environment. Their famous tableside guac is made to order and the corn tortillas are hand made. And if tequila is your poison, there’s hundreds of options to choose from.

Come visit us on Instagram or Facebook and share some of your favorite Palm Beach stops!

See you at the boat show!

Vineyard Vines vs Our Good Dog Spot – Dog Collar Comparison

Our Good Dog Spot has made some very exciting changes in the past few months. Along with redesigning our online store, we have also decided to focus exclusively on our own unique, nautical-themed dog collars and accessories.

In the past, OGDS also offered Vineyard Vines dog collars to all of our customers because they made a good quality collar with colorful and fun, preppy designs. However, going forward, we will be 100% Our Good Dog Spot!

We’ve experienced consistent growth and an increased customer base as a result of the development of our own exclusive, truly “Spot” designs. Our products have peaked the interest of the boating and coastal communities.

So we’ve decided that going forward we will no longer offer Vineyard Vines dog collars. We’ll offer our customers only OGDS original designs, the very best dog collars for your preppy and nautical pup.

For all of our loyal customers, we’d like to share the differences between Our Good Dog Spot collars and Vineyard Vines dog collars.

Dogs everywhere are barking for nautical, preppy dog collars. OGDS’ exclusive, unique, fun dog collars, leads and After 5′ bowties are sure to impress your family and friends.

We’re fully stocked and happy to outfit nautical, preppy pups everywhere.

We just rolled out Spring 2019 new designs, but stay connected with us because we have exciting designs for the summer!
